Latinx Salud Poems:  An Inaugural Collection

Salud

Saludos, señora.
You look at me skeptically as I greet you in Spanish.
I explain that I am a medical student helping today.
You tell me that your granddaughter, with you today, wants to be a nurse.

Salud. ¿Cómo está su salud, señora?
You tell me about how tired you get walking to la bodega.
It has been hard to take your medication.
Your anxiety is worse.

Saludable. ¿Cómo le podemos ayudar sentir más saludable?
I ask how we can help you feel better.
We talk about your family’s health.
The loss of your mother one month ago.
You held her hand as she took her last breath.
Your granddaughter cries, so do you.
Four generations down to three.
I hand you both a tissue and you hold my hand
as though you are shaking it.

Saludos, señora.
